There is no denying that many people have taken an interest in the activity in recent years. Here are some reasons why throwing a few punches could provide you with a perfect combination of fun and fitness.
1. It makes you use every part of your body
Grab the gloves if you want to challenge several parts of your body, fitness experts say.
“If you do it right — once you’ve learned how to fire everything with proper form — you’re getting a full-body workout,” explained Hernan Santa Jr., head of the sparring program at EverybodyFights in New York.
Boxing stands out from a lot of other exercises as it gets you to move in a variety of ways, give your legs something to do, bend and duck, throw punches, draw power from your hips, etc.
“You’ll also work your back, shoulders, and core,” Santa added.
2. It is highly effective for burning calories
According to research estimates, boxing can burn up to 800 calories an hour — considered to be more than any other sport. The type of boxing you take up can help determine a more accurate figure of how much you burn.
Jessica Matthews, an exercise physiologist for the American Council on Exercise, laid out the numbers — boxing in a ring for a good half hour can burn 400 calories, while the same amount of time can burn 200 calories if you use a punching a bag instead. Thirty minutes of sparring with a partner, on the other hand, can blast around 300 calories.
3. It can improve your eye-hand coordination
Boxing (especially with padded targets) involves a lot of focus, processing what you see, and responding with your movements accordingly — all of which help in getting different parts of the brain to work at the same time. This is why many individuals who are diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease take up boxing to manage their symptoms.
“Boxing requires some of the very things Parkinson’s takes away — rotational movement, power, a lot of twisting. Twisting is one of the things that fades away during Parkinson’s,” said Patricia Wessels, a physical therapist at Mind Body Physical Therapy & Wellness Center Inc.
4. It’s one of the best exercises for stress relief
Let’s face it, sometimes you just need to punch something and let out your pent-up energy. As several studies have found boxing can help improve mood, public figures have also credited the exercise for being a fun way to not just look better but also feel better.
“When working out on the punching bag, your brain increases the production of endorphins, the neurotransmitters that create feel-good thoughts,” said Tanya Morgan, a boxing coach from elite gym BXR London.
The stress-relieving effects are not limited to the brain, she noted, as the act of punching also helps in relieving the muscle tension we tend to collect as a result of stress.
